NVTA Seeks Public Input on Draft BRT Action Plan

The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) is taking a major step toward improving regional connectivity with a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Action Plan. The Draft Plan identifies up to 28 potential BRT routes to expand all-day transit service across the Washington-Metropolitan area. NVTA is confident expanded BRT service will reduce congestion while improving mobility and accessibility for all.

The 28 identified routes were designed to complement and extend existing transit options, including Metro, VRE and local commuter bus systems to improve connections to the places where people live, work and shop. The outlined system builds on NVTA’s investments in five BRT segments, totaling more than $880 million. While the routes keep a focus in Northern Virginia, several routes branch into highly frequented areas in Maryland and Washington D.C.

NVTA is seeking input from the public to understand what BRT routes should be prioritized for future funding cycles. Input can be provided through an online feedback form. The public will also have an opportunity to view the BRT system map and speak to NVTA staff in-person during a series of pop-up events.

How the public can get involved:

  • Pop-up Event Schedule

Once community feedback is incorporated, NVTA staff will present recommendations to Authority board members, seeking adoption of the Action Plan in July 2025.
